Difference between Hypothesis and Theory

Main Difference

Hypothesis and Theory are the two scientific terms. We can define the Hypothesis as “A proposed or suggested explanation for any phenomenon made at the starting for investigating that phenomenon which is based upon thoughts and minds of the people”. While on the other hand Theory may be defined as “A well-substantiated explanation of any phenomenon which is verified through observations, tested through experimentation  and has no doubts about it.” Hypothesis is based upon the assumptions but Theory is based on the observations through scientific method of research.  Theory is supported by the evidence while on the other hand Hypothesis is just a suggested possible result.

Hypothesis

hypothesisWe can define the Hypothesis as “A proposed or suggested explanation for any phenomenon made at the starting for investigating that phenomenon which is based upon thoughts and minds of the people”. Hypothesis is based upon the assumptions. Hypothesis is just a suggested possible result. Hypothesis leads to Theory through observations and experimentation. Hypothesis is based on very limited data. Hypothesis is easy to be made as it is just based upon little knowledge about the matter. We can say that Hypothesis is the first assumption made by the researcher to investigate the phenomenon through scientific method. Just as an example during early era of Biology it was considered that mosquito was the root cause behind the disease “Malaria”. It was just based upon simple observation of the people which became the base of research to find the the root cause.

Theory

theory-wordleTheory may be defined as “A well-substantiated explanation of any phenomenon which is verified through observations, tested through experimentation  and has no doubts about it.” Theory is based on the observations through scientific method of research. Theory is supported by the evidence. Theory is based upon a wide set of data. When a hypothesis is verified through number of experiments changing the circumstances it becomes Theory. Investigating the cause of “Malaria”, scientists did lot of experiments with different conditions and finally concluded that Mosquito are the cause to transfer the Malarial viruses to human being which became the Theory. But scientific method does not stops at Theory but it leads to Law and Principle. Law. Theory is further testified and experimented and leads to Law if it meets the standard requirements. Einstein gave the Theory of Relativity which was initially was just a Hypothesis. But going through tests and experimentation it became Theory. Although the scientific chapter is not close here, still the working over it is being carried to investigate it deeply. Other examples of Theory are Big Bang, Germ Theory and Climate Theory.

Key Differences

  • We can define the Hypothesis as “A proposed or suggested explanation for any phenomenon made at the starting for investigating that phenomenon which is based upon thoughts and minds of the people”. While on the other hand Theory may be defined as “A well-substantiated explanation of any phenomenon which is verified through observations, tested through experimentation and has no doubts about it.”
  • Hypothesis leads to Theory through observations and experimentation.
  • Theory is based upon experiments and facts but Hypothesis is not based upon experiments.
  • Hypothesis may be proven false but Theory is verified.
  • Both may be falsifiable but probability of falsifiable for Hypothesis is more than that of Theory.
  • Theory is well substantiated but Hypothesis is not.
  • Hypothesis is based on very limited data but on the other hand Theory is based upon a wide set of data.
  • Hypothesis is easy to be made as it is just based upon little knowledge about the matter but for Theory lot of knowledge with verified facts and proofs is required.
  • Our any assumption may be said as Hypothesis but Theory is only the verified Hypothesis.
