Difference between Lighttpd and Nginx

Main Difference

Lighttpd and Ngnix are open source HTTP servers. Both of the Lighttpd and Nginx are fast and lightweight. These are asynchronous servers in which the Nginx uses only few megabytes of RAM while Apache consume hundreds of megabytes. Lighttpd has support for IPv6 whereas IPv6 support for Ngnix is under process. Separated error logging feature is supported by Ngnix but not supported by the Lighttpd. Full-blown “Bug Tracking System” is supported by the Lighttpd while Ngnix has a poor man’s bug tracking system.

Lighttpd

lighttpdLighttpd is an open-source web server optimized for speed-critical environments while remaining standards-compliant, secure and flexible. Lighttpd supports X-Sendfile since version 1.5. Apache 1 does not support X-Sendfile. Lighttpd is distributed under the terms of the Revised BSD License, a three-clause, copyfree variant of the BSD License. While serving static files with simple HTTP server Lighttpd gives simple setup

Nginx

nginxNginx was designed as a web server as well a proxy server. Nginx lacks the ability for processing the dynamic content natively. while Nginx does not let the additional configuration on a per-directory basis via evaluating and interpreting directives. Requests are faster served by the Nginx.

Key Differences

  • Lighttpd runs as a single process while Ngnix works as one master process.
  • In a more fragmented file system Lighttpd performs best compare to Ngnix.
  • CPU used by Ngnix is far less than Lightdpd.
  • Lighttpd has support for IPv6 whereas IPv6 support for Ngnix is under process.
  • Separated error logging feature is supported by Ngnix but not supported by the Lighttpd.
  • While serving static files with simple HTTP server Lighttpd gives simple setup but Ngnix is harder in case.
  • In United States Lighttpd has been popular than Ngnix.
  • Full-blown “Bug Tracking System” is supported by the Lighttpd while Ngnix has a poor man’s bug tracking system.
  • IRC channels are supported by both Lighttpd and Ngnix but Ngnix Channels are very quiet having large responses delays to the questions by users.
